Nikolaus Kopernikus (1473 - 1543) wuchs als Sohn einer begüterten Patrizierfamilie auf. Nach philosophischen, mathematischen und astronomischen Studien an den Universitätenvon Krakau, Bologna und Rom studierte er Medizin und Kanonisches Recht in Padua und Ferrara. Während seines Italienaufenthaltes verkehrte er in humanistischen Kreisen der italienischen Renaissance, las wissenschaftliche und philosophischeTexte antiker Autoren und beschäftigte sich intensiv mit Astronomie, vor allem mit den Texten von Regiomontanus. Nach Polen zurückgekehrt bekleidete er lebenslang Kirchenämter undwar beruflich vielseitig tätig, unter anderem als Arzt, Verwalter von Kapitelgütern, als Diplomat und als Staatsmann.
