Being Untruthful

Lies constitute one of several variants of non-factual communication. Based on the Interdisciplinary Graduate School on Factual and Fictional Narration, the contributions in this volume are both theoretical and historical and span a wide range of different approaches. While the essays from literary studies focus on the traditional accusation of fiction as lying and analyse the modern and postmodern play with mimesis and illusion in novels and plays, the psychological, philosophical, legal and historical contributions offer a variety of insights into the ubiquity of lying and its functions in various historical and pragmatic contexts. Die Lüge ist eine der Spielformen nicht-faktualen Kommunikation, die keinen Anspruch auf Wahrheit erfüllen. Im Rahmen des Graduiertenkollegs Faktuales und Fiktionales Erzählen untersuchen die hier versammelten Beiträge verschiedene Theorien und historische Kontexte, in denen Varianten des Lügens, Täuschens, Fälschens, Betrügens und der Falschaussage bzw. der Falschnachricht (fake news) entscheidend sind: so z. B. die zentrale Rolle der Verstellung in der Renaissance, die literarische Konturierung von Fiktion im Gegensatz zur Lüge, aber auch der spielerische Umgang mit Faktualität und Fiktionalität in Roman und Drama. Die Psychologie diskutiert das Lügen als ein Entwicklungsstadium; die Rechtswissenschaft untersucht sog. "legal fictions".
