Der Atlas prasentiert in optisch eindrucksvoller Weise die Verbreitung umgangssprachlicher Bezeichnungen in den einzelnen Teilen des deutschen Sprachgebiets. Wo man &quote;Metzger&quote; sagt und wo &quote;Fleischer&quote;, und wo man eine Turklinke &quote;Turdrucker&quote; und wo &quote;Turschnalle&quote; nennt, lat sich im WDU auf einen Blick ablesen. Die vier Bande enthalten insgesamt 227 Wortkarten sowie, als Anhang zu den Banden 2 und 4, 40 Karten zur Verbreitung regionaler Besonderheiten in Aussprache und Grammatik der deutschen Gegegenwartssprache.
