It is 1996. Sixteen year old Lucy does not want her newly born daughter, and is only too glad to hand her over to boyfriend Adam. Penny Ward lives in Scotland. For many years she was a Support for Learning teacher, and now finds it very easy to do nothing! She enjoys time with her grandchildren and friends, and has a huge sympathy for young women like Lucy, who are failed by the education system. She would like to see it become very unfashionable for teenagers to have babies - and hopes 'The Jewel' might show youngsters why!
