Now entering its seventh year, Big Brother is an annual event on British TV. It generates a huge amount of press and shines a spotlight on the state of Britain today. But what do the producers really do? Have they got a hidden agenda? Do they edit to create characters? How do the media manipulate our opinions? Can they really make or break a star? And what do the contestants think? Do they feel used or do they relish the opportunity? What is life after the show like for them? Would they recommend it to others? Narinder Kaur, a former Big Brother contestant, has travelled the country speaking with past contestants from all series as well as with TV producers and the media. In the year 2000 Big Brother exploded onto our TV screens and instantly changed TV forever. It changed the way we watched it and the way we interacted with it. No longer were the public just viewers, they became participants too.
At first it was documentary-like but it soon became a living, breathing soap opera. Year by year the characters became more bizarre, the hunger for fame increased and the stakes became higher.
Now, 7 years on, Narinder Kaur, an ex-housemate from series 2, looks back at how this extraordinary TV programme has shaped the lives of those who made it onto our screens and became part of our lives for a few weeks each summer. Did they find fame, fortune and happiness or have they drifted back to the privacy of their own lives?
For the first time, many of the ex-housemates have given completely candid accounts of their time in the house and their experiences on leaving it. We also hear from the media who report on it year after year and the TV producers who create the cast of characters we come to love and hate.
Narinder Kaur has woven these previously untold stories together to create a funny, honest and insightful depiction of the TV phenomenon that is Big Brother.
Big Brother: The Inside Story brings you the reality behind the reality.
Résumé
Following Brian Johnston's death in 1994, Prime Minister John Major appeared to speak for the nation when he remarked that 'Summers will never be the same.' To an Englishman's ears, the sound of leather against willow will always be closely associated with the cheerful tones of Johnners.Brian Johnston was a man who admitted: 'I have this absurd hankering to make people laugh.' He also summed up his books as 'the meanderings of a remarkably happy and lucky person, to whom life, like cricket, is a funny game and still a lot of fun.' Lovingly edited by his eldest son, Barry, A Delicious Slice of Johnners is a wonderfully enjoyable compendium of three of Johnners' best loved books, the autobiographies It's Been a Lot of Fun and It's a Funny Game, and Rain Stops Play
