Josh Spodek disconnected his Manhattan apartment from the electric grid in May 2022. He didn't know how he'd last more than a day. He learned by doing and he's still going.

He didn't ask permission or wait for institutional aid, though he had practiced unplugging appliances and bought a used solar panel from Craigslist, hoping it would help.
