Orwell verstand das Buch ebenso wie seine Satire "Farm der Tiere" als Negativfolie für einen demokratischen Sozialismus. Das Jahr 1984 ist zwar vergangen, ohne dass sich die Schreckensvisionen erfüllt hätten, an Aktualität hat dieses Werk trotzdem kein bisschen verloren.
