There are many thrilling moments in the life of a freelance crochet designer. I know, you wouldn't believe it - thrills and crochet in the same breath - but it's true! And it's no word of a lie to say that this book, Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets, came about simply through a series of such thrills.Firstly, the thrill of seeing my previous book, Mosaic Crochet Workshop, actually sell - and do rather well. Then there was the thrill of going to London to meet with my publisher, the lovely Ame Verso from David & Charles, to discuss the aforementioned book and see if there was another book bubbling away in my mind, just waiting to be written. The thrill of perching on bar stools together, drinking Guinness (am I allowed to admit that? It was only lunchtime...) and eating fish finger sandwiches in a lovely west London pub. And the thrill of laughing and chatting about crochet, about its scope and versatility, about how if you think laterally you can fling it wide open and come up with all manner of new, exciting directions and dimensions. See what I mean? Thrills and crochet!But, in all seriousness, as we were talking, Ame and I realized there was a beautiful opportunity here to put together a brand new style of book, with a brilliantly simple idea behind it - a mix and match crochet manual of 100 different crochet patterns. Each pattern would be worked into an individual long strip and then seamed together with other strips in any combination you like, in any colours, to create your own amazing and unique blankets. With Ame's infectious, unwavering positivity and my designer brain raring to go (and, I have to say, my wonderful, long-suffering testers on hand), Mix and Match Modern Crochet Blankets came into being.As you flick through the pages of this book, you'll find a vast array of crochet styles and techniques. With so many patterns to choose from, it has been grouped into eight sections, so you can really get stuck into a 'theme' - such as bobbles or filet - or mix it up as much as you like. There are countless options for texture, colourwork, modern techniques and more traditional crochet... And if that wasn't enough to whet your appetite, you'll also find some fun extra projects that use a couple of the patterns in different ways. If you have time, I wholeheartedly recommend grabbing a drink and a quiet half hour (at least!) to have a good browse through the entire book before you reach for your hook and yarn. Each pattern is written in full, and has a chart and a cute little picture of the swatch, so I do hope you will find lots of inspiration, and maybe even try your hand at a crochet technique or two you've never tried before.You can absolutely dive in and start creating your own masterpiece or, if you need help to get started, I have designed five beautiful 'vibe' blankets to offer you some inspiration. Later on in the book there are options to add a simple edging, plus tips on adding embellishments such as pompoms and tassels to finish off your blanket with a flourish. However you go about it, it's worth reading through the information on the following pages to get you started. Then begin exploring this wonderful world of colour, texture and pattern.
