The volume provides a comprehensive overview of early childhood intervention from a scientific as well as from a practical perspective.
The first section describes the system of early intervention in Germany, Sweden, Russia, and the United States of America.
The second section explores the interaction between biological and psychosocial risk factors, the assessment and the developmental idiosyncrasies in children with impairment or at risk.
The third section addresses the core of early intervention: the family system with regard to impaired and handicapped children, and formal and informal social networks.
The fourth section deals with planning and evaluating early intervention programmes, methods and efficiency.
The fifth section reports research findings from intervention studies of children with impairment or at risk, and describes methods of intervention which could promote childhood development.
