When Anna retired after 30 years of teaching, and her children now grown up, she was able to pursue her various interests. She raised the profile of netball, securing a weekly column reporting on league matches, and so honing her writing and photographic skills. Her dog Ruby was a significant influence, and together they travelled around the UK and Europe in her motorhome. She quickly discovered little information was available about camping with dogs, and began writing articles accompanied by photographs to submit to magazines, and several were published. Upon Ruby's demise Anna wrote her book "My Friend Ruby" chronicling their time together. With Ruby's daughter, Amber, great-granddaughter Pearl, and most recently Pearl’s son Pippin, Anna continued travelling in her motorhome seeking out the best dog-friendly campsites. In 2016, a series of her articles about walks from campsites, entitled “Wonderful Walks,” were published in Motorhome Monthly Magazine (MMM). She also began writing her series of “Wonderful Walks” books, providing travel guides and walking routes for campers and their dogs throughout the UK. In 2023, Anna was featured on Channel 5’s Million Pound Motorhomes.

The campsites are located throughout the UK, which has been divided into 7 regions:- WALES. NORTH EAST Cleveland, County Durham, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, York, Yorkshire East, Yorkshire North, Yorkshire South, Yorkshire West. NORTH WEST Cheshire, Cumbria, Isle of Man, Lancashire, Merseyside. CENTRAL Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire. SOUTH EAST Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Isle of Wight, London, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Sussex East, Sussex West, Suffolk. SOUTH WEST Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Somerset, Wiltshire. SCOTLAND Each region has three campsites selected from different counties. I have included two extra campsites because they are particularly special So the book comprises of 23 campsites with detailed instructions for 46 walks. Each of the following chapters is a region of the UK. The campsites and the accompanying walks are in alphabetical order of the county in which they are located. First there is a brief summary of the unique characteristics of the county followed by a description of the campsite. Then there is the most important section; Pearl’s of Wisdom. This is what she thinks of the campsite and walks. Following this are the instructions for the walks. First is the short walk of between 4-6miles(6-10km). This is divided into 4 sections. Next are the instructions of the longer walk, which is supposed to take all day, between 8-11miles(13-18km). This is divided into 8 sections. The final section is a brief account of the activities and attractions in the immediate vicinity, approximately within a 10mile(16km) radius of the campsite. It may be possible to walk to some of them though there is not always a convenient walking route. The campsites and walks have been purposely selected to illustrate the huge variety and diversity to be found in the UK. There are campsites with just basic facilities as well as some with a range of services. Similarly the walks traverse a range of landscapes. All these walks are possible with dogs and if they are well behaved the jaunts are easier and more enjoyable. The dogs need to be agile to manage the stiles, fences and walls and there is the very occasional “sheep proof” stile which may require a helping haul and shove for them to get over if they are too big to lift. These walks are not particularly challenging as most of the routes are along tracks and across fields. However, a reasonable degree of fitness is necessary and a moderate level of stamina as there are stiles and gates to climb over and some quite steep hills. Consequently these walks are not suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. As for children, parents need to decide which walks are appropriate for their child. This book can be used in various ways:-For a weekend break, going to just one campsite and doing the walks from that campsite. For longer trips of about a week and exploring a region visiting all 3 campsites and doing the 9 walks. For an extended expedition; visiting several regions and either doing all the walks in each region or selecting just one campsite and so experience a flavour of the region.
