This book discusses innovation and invention. It introduces innovation, the innovation eco-system needed in company to succeed in innovation, the need for innovation and its timing with respect to the product life cycle. It shows how to develop innovation strategy and get ready for product development, the management of innovation processes from the concept phase to commercialization and supplies practical tools and techniques for achieving success in complex, fast-track technology development projects.
In today's world of fast-paced innovation from all corners of the world, technology is getting obsolete much faster than it was 50 years ago. In order to match the fast-evolving market demand and evolution of technology, one needs to innovate much faster. The whole process of developing technology/product/services from concept phase to prototyping to series production and commercialization has to happen in a very structured way so that the process is not only fast-track and lean but also very efficient.
The methodology presented in the book has been applied in many real-life projects. The book will be of interest to professionals in business and technology as well as students.
Explains intellectual property rights (IPR) and IP strategy development Presents a well-tested methodology for fast-track multi-discipline technology development projects Covers all phases of technology development: from concept development to commercialization

He was an assistant professor at ISM (now IIT), Dhanbad, India before moving to Norway being invited to join Tel-Tek (Now SINTEFF) at Porsgrunn. In Norway, he worked with applied research in the field of powder technology and developing technology for process industry. He was also teaching at HiT (now University of South Norway) as a professor in powder technology. During his tenure at Porsgrunn, he collaborated with oil and gas sector industries for new technology development. Dr. Datta has been an inventor in three patents in collaborative innovation work with companies like National Oilwell, Statoil (Equinor), Rolls Royce Marine, etc. He has several publications in international peer reviewed journals and conferences.
As a program manager at Kongsberg Devotek, Dr. Datta has managed several multi-discipline technology development (often with revolutionary technology) projects for the oil and seismic sectors industries (for customers like Statoil (Equinor), Hydro Oil & Gas, Fugro, etc.) from concept development to commercialization, which has resulted in several patents also. The author had the privilege of leading a few game-changing technology development projects related to subsea electrification in Norway for the oil industry and automatization for the seismic industry. Autonomous snow plough machine (now commercially available in Norway) started as a student project developing the concept under the author's management. Dr. Datta has also worked as the head of Patent and Innovation in a patent company in Norway.
Dr. Datta is currently working as the director for Innovation at NILU (Norwegian Institute for Air Research) in Norway. Dr Datta is a 'Standards Norway' expert member of Norwegian National Committee for Innovation Management. He is also a member of Norwegian National Committee for the investigation of misconduct in research.
