This book offers the first substantial investigation of the preaching and mobilization of the Third Crusade (1187-1192), an expedition of preeminent historical importance. Assembling roughly 200 sermon texts and 100 manuscripts, it fundamentally contests the hitherto chronicle-based historiography.
