The book presents some advances in the analysis and design of deep foundations. It contains 21 technical papers covering various aspects of analysis and design of deep foundations based on full-scale field testing, numerical modeling and analytical solutions. They present results and findings from research as well as practical-oriented studies on deep foundations that are of interest to civil/geotechnical engineering community. The topics cover a wide spectrum of applications that include evaluation of the axial and lateral capacity of piles, pile group effects, evaluation of the increase in pile capacity with time (or pile setup), influence of excavation on pile capacity, study the behavior of pile raft caisson foundations, evaluation of the bearing capacity and settlement of piles from cone penetration tests, etc. The volume is based on the best contributions to the 2nd GeoMEast International Congress and Exhibition on Sustainable Civil Infrastructures, Egypt 2018 - The official international congress of the Soil-Structure Interaction Group in Egypt (SSIGE).

Dr. Abdel-Rahman got his Bachelor degree from Faculty of Civil Engineering - Ain-Shams University Cairo EGYPT in 1986. Afterwards he went to Germany at University of Hannover, where he got a master degree with "Distinction" in Geotechnique and Infrastructure Engineering . His PhD study under the excellent supervision of Prof. Achim Hettler at University of Dortmund - Germany was completed in 1999 with innovative results related to the Numerical Investigation of Scale Effect by Earth Pressure Problems. After getting his Ph.D., he joined the team at Institute for Geotechnical Engineering at Leibniz University of Hannover as Senior Lecturer then he was nominated by the head of the department Prof. Martin Achmus to be his Oberingenieur-Deputy Head. During his academic career, he published with the team in his department Institute for Geotechnical Engineering (IGtH) more than 60 publications mainly in the Numerical Modeling of Foundations Systems for Wind Energy Plants (Onshore & Offshore) and supervised more that 80 Bachelor and Master theses.Different conference publications have been awarded Best Conference Paper Award e.g. K. Abdel-Rahman & M. Achmus Behaviour of Monopile and Suction Bucket Foundation Systems for Offshore Wind Energy Plants in 2006. Last but not least, winning in 2016 Outstanding Paper Award from the international journal Computers and Geotechnics for a paper with Prof. Martin Achmus et al. titled Behaviour of Monopile Foundations under Cyclic Lateral Loading.
Dr. Bengt H. Fellenius is a professional engineer specializing in foundation design and studies by participation in project teams, special investigations, instrumented field tests, etc. Services are also provided in regard to construction problems, claims, and litigation in collaboration with Consultants and Contractors, as well as Owners. Dr. Fellenius, Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa from 1979 through 1998, is an internationally recognized authority in the field of soil mechanics and foundation engineering, and, in particular, in deep foundations.
