Sterben ( Dying ), the third volume of the historical-critical edition of the early works of Arthur Schnitzler, presents the first of his novellas that was published as a separate book (1895). The publication of this work was a breakthrough moment in his career as a writer. This edition offers facsimiles of the hand-written early versions of the work and includes a transcription that was formulated specifically for Schnitzler's difficult handwriting. The edited print text is based on the first edition, and includes a critical apparatus and line-by-line commentary. An editorial report traces in detail the history of the novella's creation and transmission.
